Mini, Classic, Mega: Pick a Board That Fits the Sitting

13 September 2026 · Pathwords · Journal

Three rooms, one kind of play

Some mornings you have five quiet minutes before the house wakes up. Some evenings you want to wander a letter grid until the kettle cools. Pathwords gives you three board sizes for that reason. Not as a brain-training difficulty ladder. As rooms that fit the sitting you actually have.

At pathwords.co, the craft stays the same in every mode. Connect adjacent letters eight ways, including diagonals. Do not reuse a tile in the same word. Chase listed everyday words. Optionally glance at bonus leftovers. What changes is how big the room is, how long a path can run before it feels finished, and how the list tends to sit in your hands.

Pathwords is a puzzle for enjoyment. Soft engagement. Warm voice. Published by Pathwords.

When each mode fits a real day

Mini belongs to the short, complete sitting. Coffee still hot. Bag by the door. You want a board that can resolve before the next interruption, not a project that asks you to come back three times. The 3×3 grid is intimate. Nine tiles. Words at least three letters. Paths resolve quickly. A familiar three-letter listed word can open the whole board. You can finish the sitting, feel the soft markers land, and close the tab without guilt.

Reach for Mini when the day is already loud. Reach for Mini when you want the satisfaction of a complete board more than the pleasure of lingering. Reach for Mini when Classic would feel like too much room for the time you have.

Classic is the default feel for many players. A 4×4 grid. Words at least four letters. Enough room for interesting diagonals. Enough list to feel like a real daily. Not an afternoon project unless you want it to be. Classic is the sitting that matches coffee that cools slowly, a lunch break that still has edges, or an evening when you want a clear start and a clear finish without needing a second hour.

Reach for Classic when you want balance. Enough geometry to notice. Enough listed words to feel the checklist matter. Enough space that a dead start can be abandoned without emptying the board.

Mega is for the open evening, the quiet Sunday, or the day when you want more routes under your finger. A 5×5 grid. Still a four-letter minimum. More tiles. More chance to linger. Still untimed. Still optional Genius. Still yours to leave when you choose. Mega is not a promotion. It is a larger room.

Reach for Mega when you want to notice paths that take a longer walk. Reach for Mega when the list can wait a little while you try another corner. Reach for Mega when lingering is the point of the sitting, not a side effect.

Switching day to day is fine. Consistency of sitting matters more than consistency of grid. Enjoyment is the metric.

What changes on Mini vs Classic vs Mega

Three things shift when you change size: path length, list feel, and lingering.

Path length. On Mini, a three-letter path can be a whole listed word. Trails are short. You see the end of a word while your finger is still near the start. On Classic, four letters is the floor. Paths have more room to bend through diagonals before they land. On Mega, the floor stays four letters, but the map is larger. A word can wander farther before it closes. The same eight-way rule applies. The walk just has more tiles to choose from.

List feel. Mini lists tend to feel compact. Fewer tiles mean a shorter checklist and a sitting that can finish while the tea is still warm. Classic lists feel like a daily you can clear or partially clear in one sitting without treating the board as homework. Mega lists give you more to notice. More listed everyday words to chase. More leftover space where bonus words may wait if you still feel like looking. In every mode, listed words pay 2 points per letter toward Genius. Optional bonus leftovers pay 1 point and stay optional. Genius is built from listed words alone. Bonus never becomes required homework.

Lingering. Mini invites a quick complete pass. You can still pause. You can still rethink a diagonal. The board simply runs out of corners sooner. Classic invites a middle length of attention: enough to settle, not so much that the sitting becomes an afternoon. Mega invites lingering on purpose. More edges. More quiet tiles. More chances to leave a trail, stretch, and come back to the same board because nothing is ticking.

What does not change is the kind of play. Same letter-path enjoyment. Different sitting lengths.

Same rules across modes

Whatever mode you pick, the honest product facts hold.

Modes are not separate games with separate rulebooks. They are sized rooms that share one craft. If you learn the path on Classic, you already know how to play Mini and Mega. The minimum length and the grid size are the main knobs. Everything else stays familiar.

On the web, today’s board and a free archive open without an account. On iOS, Play Another offers an extra board after the daily when you want one more sitting. Miss a day if life is loud. Soft habit, not streak guilt as a sales tool.

Not a difficulty ladder

It is easy to misread three sizes as Cadet, Pilot, and Ace for your brain. That is not the frame here.

Mini is not easy mode for beginners who need training. Mega is not advanced cognitive work. Classic is not the middle grade on a report card. They are board sizes. Pick the one that matches how long you want to sit with a letter path today.

A skilled player can enjoy Mini because it is short and complete. A new player can enjoy Mega because the evening is open and the board waits. Skill does not map to size. Mood and calendar do.

If you catch yourself choosing Mega to prove something, pause. Choose Mega because you want more room. If you catch yourself avoiding Mini because it seems too small to count, pause again. A finished Mini sitting is a real sitting. Soft markers can land there too. Stars and Genius are feedback about the board, not a verdict about you.

Soft habit access around the three rooms

A soft habit needs doors that open without paperwork.

On the web, you can open today’s Mini, Classic, or Mega without creating an account. If you miss a day, the free archive keeps past boards available. Catch-up for fun is allowed. Catch-up as penance is not required. Opening an old day does not owe anyone a streak story.

On iOS, after the daily, Play Another is there for appetite. Finished Classic and still curious? Play Another. Finished Mini and feel complete? Close the app. Both are successful days. Extra play is not atonement for a short board. It is another letter-path sitting when you want one.

Untimed play keeps the habit humane across all three sizes. You can list a few everyday words on Mini and leave. You can wander Classic toward Genius. You can pause mid-trail on Mega, answer a knock, and return without a failed countdown. The board size should serve the sitting. The sitting should bend with the day.

Examples of play in each room

Imagine a morning where you have seven quiet minutes. Mini fits. You open the 3×3. You start from a corner letter you have not used as a start yet. A three-letter listed word lands. Another short path follows from leftover letters. Soft markers move. You close the board before the next person needs the kitchen. That is a complete Pathwords sitting.

Imagine a lunch break with a clear half hour and no rush. Classic fits. You open the 4×4. You try a stem that dies on the side, then reopen it on a diagonal. A four-letter listed word clears. You chase two more everyday words from the list. Bonus leftovers can wait. Genius can wait or not. You leave when the break ends, not when a clock says the puzzle failed.

Imagine an evening with the house quiet. Mega fits. You open the 5×5. You linger. You abandon a dead start without drama. You list a familiar four-letter word, then another longer path that bends through a quiet corner. You stretch. You come back. The board is still there. Untimed play makes that return ordinary instead of urgent.

None of these examples is a training protocol. They are ordinary calendar matches to board size.

Soft engagement, not a program

We will not call Mini, Classic, and Mega a clinical ladder, an IQ track, or a cognitive-enhancement plan. No medical claims. No disease hooks. No clinically proven theater. No rewires your brain language. No curing or improving cognition as a program promise.

The modes exist so the puzzle can fit real life: a short board before you leave the house, a Classic with coffee, a Mega when the evening is open. That is craft and product clarity. Letter-path play for enjoyment.

This note is not a second How to play page. It is a soft guide to choosing a room for the sitting you actually have. Other journals cover listed versus bonus, why there is no timer, habit without streak traps, and what to try when a trail goes quiet. This one stays on size and mood.

It is not ThinkFun PathWords, not pathwords.co.uk, and not the Arnold app. The modes above describe this Pathwords only.

A short close

Open today’s puzzle at pathwords.co. Pick Mini, Classic, or Mega for the sitting you want, not for a training rank. Trace a path. List what you find. Leave when you are ready. The board size should serve the sitting. The sitting should stay enjoyable.
