Pathwords, the daily letter-path puzzle

A daily letter-path puzzle

What Pathwords is

Pathwords is an untimed daily letter-path puzzle you play in the browser at pathwords.co. A new official board arrives each local day. The letters are already on the grid. You make words by tracing a path through tiles that touch, eight ways, including on the diagonal. You keep going until every listed word is found. There is no account wall on play. The archive of past boards is free.

It is a word puzzle for enjoyment. Soft engagement. A finite sitting you can open, play, and leave. Pathwords does not claim to train your brain, raise IQ, or improve cognition as a program. It is not a medical product and not a brain-training suite. It is also not ThinkFun PathWords, not pathwords.co.uk, and not the Arnold app. This site is Pathwords, published by Pathwords.

If you want the full rules, start at How to play. Product story lives on About. Short answers live on FAQ. Craft notes live in the Journal. The board itself stays here, on the homepage, so you can play as soon as you arrive.

How a sitting works

A sitting is one board, one official list, and as much time as you want. You drag a path, tap tile by tile, or type. From any tile you may step to any of its eight neighbours. You may not reuse a tile in the same word. Classic and Mega ask for words of at least four letters. Mini accepts three. When the letters along a legal path spell a listed everyday word, you list it and the sitting moves forward.

The official daily is untimed. You can pause mid-trail, rethink a diagonal, and leave when the sitting feels complete. There is no play clock scoring you on seconds. That is a craft choice. The board waits. Enjoyment is the point of the sitting, not countdown pressure.

Listed words are the sitting. They pay two points a letter and they are the only words that move your rank. Bonus words are real, reachable leftovers that are not on today’s official list. They pay one point a letter and sit beside the rank rather than inside it. You can ignore bonus and still play Pathwords correctly. You can chase bonus after Genius if that is your fun.

Genius is every listed word: one hundred percent of the listed-word maximum for that board. Stars mark how far into the sitting you have gone. They are soft markers for this puzzle. Trail marks on a walk you chose, not a grade about your mind and not a training outcome. Ranks on the listed pot run Start, then Good, Great, Awesome, and Genius as you clear more of the official list. A fifth star is the optional bonus pot after the listed set is complete.

Hints, when you use them, point at listed words you have not found. You get three free hints per puzzle per mode. Progress lives in this browser until you finish the board or clear site data. Missing a calendar day can use one automatic streak freeze per month. Archive play is streak-neutral. Soft habit, not guilt as a sales tool.

Mini, Classic, and Mega are rooms, not a ladder

Three board sizes ship every day. They are rooms that fit how long you want to sit. They are not a brain-training difficulty ladder and not ranks about you.

  • Mini is 3×3 with a three-letter minimum. A short board for a short sitting.
  • Classic is 4×4 with a four-letter minimum. The default daily shape.
  • Mega is 5×5, still a four-letter minimum, with a longer list and more ground to cover.

Each calendar day has one official Mini, one Classic, and one Mega. Switch modes from the header once the board has loaded. Pick Mini when you want a complete sitting in a few minutes. Stay on Classic when you want the balanced daily. Open Mega when you want more room to wander. Switching sizes is fine. The adjacency rule does not change. Corners still count. A tile still cannot be used twice in the same word.

Kids is a Settings toggle, not a separate site and not a children’s URL. It can load an easier Classic or Mini lexicon. Mega is unchanged by that toggle. The default audience of this homepage is general, not child-directed.

What a Pathwords word is (and is not)

A Pathwords word is a continuous path. You are not guessing a hidden target word. The letters are visible. You are not spotting a printed list hidden in the grid the way a word search hides answers. You build words from touching letters against an official list for that day.

People sometimes file any daily letter game in one aisle. Pathwords sits on the many-word letter-path shelf: one board, many listed everyday words, optional bonus, untimed play, three room sizes. That is a different product shape from a one-word guess daily. It is the same kind of connect-letters puzzle as other letter grids in the family. Different site. Different list. This title is Pathwords.

Eight-way adjacency is the decision that makes the path feel like a path. Sides and corners both count. A stem only helps if the next letter is actually adjacent. An ending only lands when the tiles allow it. That geometry is the craft of the sitting. The Journal writes more about diagonals, listed versus bonus, and how a board is built. This homepage keeps the play in view and the explanation next to it.

Soft markers, not a report card

Scoring is puzzle feedback. Two points a letter on listed words. One point a letter on bonus. Genius when the listed set is complete. Stars as a simple picture of how far you have come on this board. Speed points, when a short streak of fast finds lights, sit in their own pot and do not change the Genius line.

None of that is an IQ score. None of it is a clinical result. Pathwords will not tell you that a daily sitting prevents, treats, cures, or delays any condition, or that it is clinically proven to change your cognition. Soft engagement and craft of play only. If you want a letter-path puzzle you can enjoy, you are in the right place. If you need medical guidance, that is a different conversation, and we stay out of that lane.

Play today, then read more if you want

The official daily is on this page. Drag, tap, or type. Leave at Genius or earlier. Come back via today’s board or the free archive. On iOS, Pathwords Puzzle can offer Play Another as extra play after the daily. The web archive is the extra-play path here.

Read How to play for the five rules in full. Read About for the product and the name collisions. Read FAQ for short answers. Read the Journal for craft notes on warm-up, habit, listed versus bonus, and category clarity. Then come back to the board.
