Leaving at Genius, or Staying for Bonus
The fork after the listed path
There is a quiet moment on many Pathwords sittings. The listed everyday words are done. Genius lights. The board is still there. A few rarer leftovers might still be reachable. You feel a small fork.
Leave clean, or stay a little longer for bonus curiosity.
Both choices are valid. Neither is a second obligation. Pathwords at pathwords.co is a letter-path puzzle for enjoyment. Soft engagement. Soft habit. Published by Pathwords. This journal is about that fork. It is not a rewrite of how Genius and stars work as markers. It is not a full list-versus-bonus pipeline essay. It is just the choice after the sitting's main ask is complete.
Genius as a soft sitting milestone
Genius means you have cleared the listed-word maximum for that board: one hundred percent of the official everyday list. Listed words pay 2 points per letter. They are the sitting. When Genius arrives, the main path ask is done.
That milestone is soft. It is not a grade about your mind. It is not an IQ score. It is not pass or fail about your worth for the day. It is puzzle feedback. The listed paths you were asked to find are found. Other journals say Genius and stars are not a report card. Here the practical point is simpler. You may leave at Genius. The sitting can end there without apology.
Soft markers like stars can still describe how the sitting felt. They do not turn Genius into a gate you must pass through before you are allowed to stop. Genius is enough. Leaving at Genius is not quitting early. It is finishing the listed ask.
Bonus as optional curiosity
Bonus words are real, reachable leftovers on the same board. They are often rarer English or proper-name shapes that did not belong on the required list. They pay 1 point per letter. They do not move Genius. They can matter for a fifth star after the listed set is complete. They are curiosity, not homework.
You can notice a bonus path while you are still clearing listed words. You can ignore bonus entirely and still play Pathwords correctly. After Genius, bonus becomes a clearer optional layer. Same grid. Lighter points. No requirement to finish every leftover the letters allow.
Soft craft keeps the tone kind. Bonus is a side pot for people who still feel like looking. It is not a second exam taped to the first.
The same eight-way craft applies whether the word is listed or bonus. Adjacent letters, sides and corners. No tile reused inside one word. What changes after Genius is not the path rule. What changes is the ask. The required everyday list is done. Anything else you find is optional curiosity on the same board.
Leave clean, or linger. Both count
Leave clean at Genius when the sitting feels complete. Close the tab. Step into the day. That is a finished Pathwords sitting. You honored the listed path. You do not owe the leftovers.
Stay for bonus when curiosity is still warm. Trace one more eight-way path. Smile if a rare leftover lists. Stop when the warmth cools, even if bonus remains. Lingering is allowed. Completing every bonus word is not required.
The fork is the product feeling we want. No FOMO that you should clear the side pot. No training-program voice that lingering improves you. No streak homework attached to leftovers. Soft engagement means the sitting ends when enjoyment ends.
Some days the fork is easy. Genius lights and you already feel done. Some days a leftover letter cluster keeps calling. Soft habit lets both days be honest. You do not need a rule that serious players always linger. You need permission to stop, and permission to look a little longer when you want to.
Untimed play makes the fork honest
The official daily is untimed. That matters at the Genius fork. A countdown would push you to rush leftovers or quit in panic. Without a clock, you can pause, stop, or linger. You can leave mid-bonus without a red mark. You can take a break and return to the same board in this browser if you want.
This is only a light tie to untimed play, not a rewrite of why Pathwords has no timer. The timer absence simply lets the Genius-or-bonus choice stay calm.
Untimed play also keeps bonus from becoming a second pressure system. After Genius, there is no clock telling you to vacuum the side pot. There is only the question of whether you still want to look. That is the soft engagement frame for the whole product, and it stays true at the fork.
Soft habit: no FOMO, no second obligation
Soft habit says you show up when you want to. It does not say you must vacuum every leftover after Genius. Streak language, when it appears at all in the product, is not a sales tool for bonus clearing. Archive play on the web is streak-neutral. Play Another after today is optional local extra play, not a demand to prolong this board.
If you leave at Genius every day for a week, that can be a healthy rhythm. If you linger for bonus on a slow Sunday Mega, that can be a healthy rhythm too. The fork respects both.
We will not sell guilt. We will not say skipping bonus costs cognitive gains. Pathwords is a puzzle for enjoyment. Not a medical program. Not brain-training outcomes. Not "clinically proven" theater. Not "rewires your brain." Not IQ promises. Not disease hooks.
Leaving at Genius does not make the next sitting harder. Lingering for bonus does not unlock a secret training benefit. Both choices are craft attitudes toward the same board. Soft habit cares that you enjoyed the path, not that you emptied every leftover.
Product craft on the same board
Whether you leave or linger, the craft stays the same:
- Drag (or tap / type) a continuous path through adjacent letters
- Eight ways, including diagonals
- No tile reused inside one word
- Listed everyday English drives Genius at 2 points per letter
- Bonus leftovers / names sit beside at 1 point per letter
- Rooms: Mini 3×3 (min 3), Classic 4×4 (min 4), Mega 5×5 (min 4)
The fork does not invent a new mode. It is an attitude toward the same sitting after the listed ask is done. Mini may offer fewer leftovers to linger on. Mega may offer more. Classic sits in between. Room size changes how long lingering can feel. It does not decide whether lingering is required.
No invented features here. No IAP pitch. No ads mechanics. No Kids-app detour. Web daily and free archive remain the dated official lane. Extra generated play stays optional elsewhere in the product.
On the web, drag paths and keyboard input can both keep trails easy. On iOS, the same letter-path craft applies to the dated daily and to optional Play Another or New Game sittings. Wherever you play, Genius still means the listed maximum. Bonus still means optional leftovers at one point per letter. The leave-or-linger fork travels with you.
Distinct from the journals this complements
Genius-and-stars-not-a-grade explains markers as soft sitting feedback. This post assumes that and asks what you do after Genius.
List-vs-bonus explains why everyday English stays listed and rarities tend toward bonus. This post assumes that split and focuses on the leave-or-linger choice.
Why-no-timer, play-another-after-today, daily-habit-not-a-streak-trap, and word-finding-for-enjoyment cover adjacent soft ideas. This slug stays on the Genius fork itself.
Those posts can stack in one week without competing. Markers tell you how the sitting is going. List versus bonus tells you which pot a word belongs to. This journal asks only one quiet question after the listed pot is clear. Do you still want to look?
Category clarity without hype
Pathwords sits on the many-word letter-path shelf: one finite board, many listed words, optional bonus, untimed play, three room sizes. That is different from a one-word guess daily and different from apps that market cognitive-training outcomes. We stay claim-safe and warm. Puzzle for enjoyment. Soft engagement. Clear rules.
It is not ThinkFun PathWords, not pathwords.co.uk, and not the Arnold app. The fork above describes this Pathwords only.
A calm way to decide in the moment
When Genius lights, ask one honest question. Do I still want to look?
If no, leave clean. The sitting is complete. If yes, linger for a bonus path or two. Stop when curiosity fades. If you are unsure, pause. Untimed play allows a breath. You can decide after the breath.
That is enough process. No checklist. No FOMO script. No "serious players always clear bonus." Soft craft players leave when the sitting feels done.
You can also change your mind mid-linger. One bonus path may be enough. Two may be enough. A dry stretch may tell you the warmth is gone. Stopping mid-bonus is still a complete sitting. Genius already finished the listed ask. Bonus never owed you a full clear.
